Transcribed by

Virgil D. White

This index to the military service records for the volunteer soldiers who served in the Indian Wars from 1815 to 1858 will certainly prove useful to those searching for an elusive or lost ancestor. The census records for this time frame are often not complete. There were many people who lived in remote areas and were not enumerated by the census takers and some of the census records are illegible or have been destroyed or misplaced.

The military service records should never be overlooked as they can open up new areas for research and this can prove extremely useful for this time frame due to the Itremendous migration of people into the former Indian lands (often still claimed by the various tribes) and frequent

movement of the population within these areas. This index lists the name of the soldier, his rank, his unit and the name of the war or disturbance as well as the general dates served as shown in National Archives Microcopy M629. There are cross-references for records under more than one spelling or for service in more than one unit as well as for each tour of duty or conflict served in. There are entries for the "Friendly Indians" who served as volunteers for the United States. The surnames are in BOLD CAPITALIZED PRINT.

Service records give varying kinds of information such as; date and place of entering military service, date and place of discharge, leave and furlough papers which often contain the reason for the leave or furlough (death or illness of a family member, family hardships, etc.), the date of death of the soldier may be given if it occurred while in the military service and various other correspondence relating to a particular volunteer.

Some of the wars mentioned in these records were; Cherokee, Creek, Seminole 1817 to 1858, Florida, Black Hawk, Winnebago of 1827, Texas Wars of 1854-5, Kansas War of 1856, Southwest Wars of 1849 to 1851, Northeast Wars of 1838-9, Southeast Wars of 1837-8, Washington Terr.
